Williamsport Area Computer Club Meeting Minutes / Newsletter -- February 1998

Kathy Kolb, Vice-President, called the meeting to order at 7 PM, February 10 1998, with 28 persons in attendance, including many newcomers.

There were no corrections to January's minutes as distributed by secretary Jim Shaffer.

Treasurer's Report:

Our treasury stands at $413.86. During January, $11.46 was paid to the Williamsport Sun-Gazette for an ad in the Public Notices section for three days.

Committees:

Advertising / Awareness / Public Relations / Home Page:

A question was raised by Jim concerning the lack of contact information in the current newspaper ad, and it was reported by Gene that it would be difficult to get more information printed without increasing the cost.

Kathy noted briefly that some of the various link lists on the Club home page are still in need of updating due to lack of time.

We received a request from Walter Kaiser for genealogical information on the family of Elsworth Kaiser in the Jersey Shore / Williamsport area in the early 1900s. Kathy reported that the Lycoming County Genealogical Society is online at http://members.aol.com/LCGSgen/lcgs.htm, and the index to the microfilms of the Sun-Gazette is viewable at http://jvb2.jvbrown.edu:4001/htbin/opac/opac_home.

The Club received a promotional flyer from the Columbia-Montour Amateur Radio Club in Berwick for their Hamfest and computer show to be held at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 25. For more information, visit http://www.bafn.org/~cmarc/, e-mail kev17815@epix.net, or call 717-752-6851.

Bylaws:

A smooth transition of all offices was reported, and Nance Walton's review of the treasury was approved.

Computer Swap Meet:

A committee was formed to prepare a preliminary plan, to be presented at the March meeting. Current members are: Sharon Souter, coordinator; David Bailey, location search; Lou Kolb, retailer contact; Kathy Kolb, advertising. More volunteers are needed!

Computer Recycling (finding charitable uses for old computers):

We received a letter of thanks and a $20 donation to cover our repair expenses from the Horizon House in Lock Haven for our donation of two monitors, a printer, and disks.

Mike Juran donated an old computer, and John Chapman donated a Gateway 386 system in need of a hard drive.

Peter Zeitler and Robbie Robbins volunteered to assemble and test systems from the parts stored at Kathy's. Kathy put Robbie in charge of the project. Persons wishing to donate materials please e-mail him at admin@lycoming.org. Jim reported on an offer from a visitor to our web page, but no followup has occurred.

North Central PA computer networking / ISP news:

It was noted that the next meeting of the Market Square Support Group at the J. V. Brown Library would be held Sunday, February 22, at 1:30. Persons interested in volunteering to help local non-profit groups create a web presence please contact Dan Yoas, dyoas@jvbrown.edu, or Kathy Kolb, kkolb@kolbweb.com. Meetings are held every 6 weeks.

PLEASE NOTE: Neale Winner's digital camera program, originally scheduled for the March W.B.A.R.A. meeting, has been postponed.

Kathy Kolb announced that she has created a new Williamsport chat room at http://www.talkcity.com/chat.cgi?room=Williamsport, and that the room will be advertised on the updated KISS-FM web page. She would like to schedule regular meeting times for this room.

AOL has increased its fees by $2 per month, to $21.95.

CSR UpLink has converted its Williamsport node to a digital line, enabling 56kbps access for local users. Also, the final 56k standard has been announced.

Jim would like to remind all local users that he will list your PERSONAL home page on the Club's page at http://www.sunlink.net/wacc/members.html if you email the URL to him at jshaffer@csrlink.net

Help:

A newcomer requested help on getting his system running after deleting some system files.

Discussion was raised concerning the safety of opening e-mail attachments, macro viruses, "email viruses" (see the Hoax List at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html), and virus scanners.

Program:

Kathy Kolb of Kolb NetWorks presented an introduction to the HTML language and an overview of the process of creating, uploading, and publicizing a web page.
